Using Olympic Weightlifting with the barbell is an extremely masterful skill….it is an olympic sport after all.
But, using the barbell for olympic lifts is not the only way to build explosiveness.
It takes months of practice with a coach, and 1000’s of repetitions to begin to receive any sort of a benefit out of them.
A lot of athletes get injured when first getting into olympic weightlifting without any sort of coach or competent trainer. If you have this kind of time and money then by all means, go for it.
However, if you do not have this kind of time, the sandbag is an excellent alternative to the barbell for performing olympic lifts.
The sandbag is a great implement for a beginner to use for an amazing explosive workout, without the risk of injury that comes from olympic weightlifting.
Two of my favorite exercises using the sandbag are the sandbag clean and the sandbag snatch.
Sandbag Clean
The Sandbag Clean is one half of the Olympic Lift, the Clean and Jerk. It is also the standard technique for getting your Sandbag, or any other weight, from the ground to chest height. The Sandbag Clean develops hand and grip strength as well as full body power.
Sandbag Snatch
The Sandbag Snatch is a powerful exercise. The snatch builds explosive lower and upper body pulling power while simultaneously builds powerful, strong and flexible shoulders. A must for any athlete. Not only does it build unreal endurance it will also strengthen you from head to toe. The sandbag snatch is used in many instances as a test because it is one the best exercises to demonstrate ones strength and conditioning. This exercise not only has a strengthening effect but will also cut body fat very fast.
