Brendan Schaub a.k.a. “Big Brown” a.k.a. “The Keto Kid” is a man of many talents (and many nicknames). This former UFC fighter turned comedian has adopted a ketogenic lifestyle, eating very low carbohydrates and high amounts of healthy fats. Using fat in the form of ketones as his main energy source, Schaub has never felt or looked better!
This is the recipe for Brendan Schaub’s favorite post-workout keto recovery shake. After a workout, Schaub chugs one of his famous “Big Brown shakes,” which includes Onnit’s Recovery Protein, Coconut MCT oil, Earth-Grown Nutrients, almond milk, chia seeds, almond butter and cold brew coffee. Here’s a breakdown of the health benefits of each ingredient:
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) oil, is a type of saturated fat that is quickly digested and easily converted to ketones, compared to other dietary fat sources. It’s a staple in the ketogenic diet, and it’s benefit for cognition has been widely studied.
Chia seeds are high in the Omega-3 fatty acid ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid), a type of polyunsaturated fat. While ALA can be converted to the active form, EPA, in the body, make sure to continue to consume fatty fish, like wild salmon and/or a fish oil supplement, for the most important Omega-3, DHA.
Almond butter is predominantly monounsaturated fats (MUFAs), which have been shown to protect against heart disease and improve insulin sensitivity. The Mediterranean diet is rich in MUFAs from olive oil, nuts, and avocados, and has been studied thoroughly as a high-fat diet with lower incidences of heart disease and cancer compared to the Western Diet.
Earth-Grown Nutrients, our daily greens powder, contains five unique blends of ingredients, which emphasizes greens, gut, and detoxification categories. Jerusalem Artichoke is one of the best prebiotic foods in existence, offering a direct food source to the friendly bacteria in our gut biome. Moringa, a cornerstone of Ayurvedic practice, is one of the most nutrient-dense greens in the world. Nettle is a herb revered for its traditional use in kidney health, and Broccoli Sprouts have been a staple of healthy eating since before healthy eating was cool.
Recovery Protein is one of a kind offering a blend of goat whey isolate, hemp protein, BCAA’s, colostrum, creatine, and powdered coconut water making it ideal in facilitating protein synthesis and re-hydration post workout.
The proof is in the…smoothie. Try it out for yourself!
